Jan Reber Hammett - Lovely! Outstanding work, Kim – but then you did have especially great subjects. :)

Tim and Alice | Carroll County Wedding

This wedding is near and dear to my heart. It speaks of love after loss and God’s amazing grace. You see, the groom in this wedding is my head pastor. He has been since I was 15. I have known him for 20 years. He married Pete and I. Pete has worked with him at our church for the past 14 years. And we just met his bride this year. You see, Tim lost his wife Lara to cancer a few years ago. It was a horrible sadness our church walked with Tim and Lara. It is hard to watch anyone go through that, let alone your head pastor’s family. Then to see him as a single dad for these past years and wonder with him if he would ever be able to love again. But God is good… and always has a plan.

Alice was on the Eastern Shore living the same story. She too had lost her husband to cancer. In fact, the same exact cancer that Lara had. The odds are something like 20 people in a million get it. What are the chances that these two would fall and love and marry? I don’t believe in chances. I believe in a God who is good and can redeem the bad, the hurt and the pain.

What is exciting about this whirlwind romance is that Tim and Alice have known each other since childhood. They grew up on the same small island in Maryland. There were sparks then, but as life goes on and college carries you away, things get complicated and grow distant. Both Tim and Alice went on with their lives and had fantastic families with their spouses whom they loved more than anything. We will never forget Lara and James.  God chose to bring them back together after tragic circumstances and rekindle an old flame.

I have loved watching their romance. Alice is new to our church family, and we welcome her with open arms. She is a great fit and we love that she loves Tim! I was honored when they asked me to capture their wedding day. I knew it would be a bit of a crazy affair with lots of folks coming from many areas and parts of each of their pasts. Such an exciting moment! So I asked if they would consider having some time alone before the ceremony for photos and a time to pause before the day got underway. I love these moments alone with a couple because the bride can truly enjoy her groom’s expression when he sees her in her dress for the first time. Tim and Alice were so much fun during this session!! They had time to pray and embrace and ham it up for the camera!

One of the best parts of this wedding for me was that my husband Pete got to officiate it. It was like coming full circle. Now Pete was marrying Tim to Alice. The service was a combination of singing praises to God, thanking Him in prayer, Pete teasing Tim and Alice and beautiful handwritten vows with their children on stage with them. You can see their joy busting through. Alice was laughing and smiling the entire ceremony and Tim was beaming. I love how the congregation came tougher to pull this off so quickly! I love that 2 of Tim’s kids are in our high school ministry and that one of Alice’s sons is now becoming a youth leader with us.

Congrats Tim and Alice!!

Deanna & Chai | Baltimore Engagement Session

As a wedding photographer in the Balitmore area, I enjoy shooting downtown! Deanna and Chai met at the University of Maryland Pharmacy school and we all thought shots at the school would be fitting! I just thought we would get some outdoor shots there, but since Deanna is a instructor there, we got to shoot in her lab/classroom. I love their sense of humor as a couple! Jumping in on my idea with the pharmacy bottles and even the silly photos with a certain enhancing drug! We then headed down to Federal Hill to grab the classic Inner Harbor skyline. A few shots at the beautiful American Visionary Art Museum’s mirror and glass mosaic wall and then on to one of my favorite little spots – Tide Point. Home of Under Armor! We had a great time and I am excited to shoot their wedding this weekend!! Scroll after their photos for some fun interview questions about Chai and Dee.

How did you meet?

Chai and Dee met at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. Both being the type to get involved, they first crossed paths on Studentdoctor.net soon after being admitted to the program. When they first met at the school’s Welcome Day, Dee thought Chai was pretty dorky, especially with that kind of haircut and glasses. She even thought to herself “I probably wouldn’t ever date this guy!” They continued to get to know each other as they began getting involved within the school, with Chai running for class president and Dee running for class secretary. They learned that they had a lot in common including their love for anime, food, and traveling.

What are you looking forward to about your actual wedding day?

We are looking forward to seeing all our wonderful family and friends who will be sharing our special day with us.
How did you like your engagement session?

It was fantastic! We had so much fun and Kim was great at getting us to open up!

Deanna, when did you know he was the one?

Funny enough, I knew about a week after we started dating! I had even called one of my girlfriends asking if it’s strange to know that he was the one so soon. And of course, he has proven time and time again that my hunch about him was right!

Chai, how did you propose?

(This is Kim here) I love their proposal story, so sweet and with photos! Check it out here. I love Chai’s poem,

Two paths joined together
that day in our first september
One from the West and one from the East,
the final question lies in this feast…

Capital Style Bridal Reader’s Choice Awards Best Photographer 2014

It was a flattering email to receive. I had been voted Best Wedding Photographer for the Capital Style Bridal Reader’s Choice Awards and the reporter wanted an interview for the website. The link to the interview went live a few weeks ago, but I thought I would share it here. While I am listed as a newcomer to the awards, I am not a newcomer to wedding photography. I have been shooting weddings for 12 years (yes, I am old!). It was a fun quick interview and you can read it here. Thank you to all who voted for me! I really appreciate it!

My sweet friend Sarah Coats of Beloved Paper is also highlighted for her stationary business!

Stephen & Alison | Silver Swan Wedding

As a wedding photographer in Maryland, I get to see a lot of different environments for weddings! This wedding showcased portraits in a grassy field by a barn, a bright airy Eastern Shore church and a reception on the Chesapeake Bay. Get ready, this is going to be a blog post with a lot of photos because the bride is a high school friend! It was such a pleasure to shoot Alison’s marriage to Stephen! I had a ton of fun on this wedding with my sister Rebecca as sidekick (who also was in high school with us and knew a few of the bridesmaids too – you can imagine how fun this was).

Alison got ready at the home of her longtime friend Tiffany (who was one of my college roommates). It was a great spot for all the girls to get ready and I loved watching Alison see herself in the mirror for the first time as a bride! Then we moved over to a fun field nearby and shot the most gorgeous portraits! Alison is a natural! We left there to go see her dad. This was a bittersweet time. Alison lost her mom last year to cancer and there were some tender moments there at their house. Grabbing a photo of Alison with her mom on her wedding day was possible when I saw the photograph of her mom AS A BRIDE on the wall!! I could not believe how much she resembled her mom! It was a sweet teary moment and when I learned that she would also have a piece of her mom’s lace wrapped around her bouquet.

Stephen was such an awesome groom! He was genuinely excited when he saw Alison come down the aisle to him. They chatted in a cute way during parts of their ceremony and were totally focused on each other the whole time. They practically ran down the aisle in joy! Since October in Maryland is so unpredictable, what had been a nice warm sunny day before the ceremony had turned into quite a windy chilly early evening by the time we arrived at Swan Harbor. We shot some brief portraits out on the water and later returned when the sun was setting. The dance floor was full all night and I loved watching Stephen in the middle of all the ladies often. Checkout their gorgeous cake from The Cake Courtesan and the amazing flowers by Flower Follies! All of their vendors are listed after the photos. Congrats Alison and Stephen!!!

I asked Alison and Stephen a few questions and here are their responses:

For Him:
What was your first thought when you saw your bride on your wedding day?
I thought she looked beautiful and, was happy to finally see her.
What was your favorite part of the day?
The times Alison and I had by ourselves during the ceremony and reception.
What are you looking forward to in marriage?
The tax  write-offs.
For Her:
What was your first though when you saw your groom on your wedding day?
I thought he looked HOT! Then joy. I immediately felt calm and excited.
What was your favorite part of the day?
The ceremony. It felt like it was just him and I and we were so giggly and happy.
What are you looking forward to in marriage?
Everything! Especially the family we will one day have.
